In the tradition of boy band reunions, New Kids on the Block (NKOTB due to the limited space on banners) are hoping to take advantage of the nostalgia factor following the recent success of Take That, Boyzone and The Backstreet Boys.
Fifteen years after their break up, New Kids on the Block are back. the five thirty show’s Gerry McCulloch met up with the band’s Danny Wood and Jonathan Knight to discuss the reunion and current tour.

Following the break-up, Danny admits he thought it was the end for the band: “I thought [the reunion] was never going to happen, if you had asked me a couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have thought it was going to happen.”

With the original fans of the band now in their late 20s and 30s, NKOTB enjoy crowds of all ages as the newly converted also attend.

“I’ve seen a lot of fans that have been around back in the day that are back here now,” said Jonathan. “I was talking to this girl, she was 22 and her mother was 43, and she was a fan of ours back in the day.”

The band take a defensive tone when questioned on their ability to keep up the dance routines as they approach middle age.

“We didn’t get back together to be the old uncle up on stage…Part of this whole thing was not to look ridiculous doing it,” said Danny. “We dance even more than we did back then.”

With sell-out gigs and positive tour reviews, the nostalgia factor is definitely on the side of the Boston boy band.
